COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Following the final regular NAIA coaches’ poll released last week, the Lindsey Wilson College women’s basketball team knew they would be “dancing” in the NAIA’s version of March Madness.
Today, the Blue Raiders found out who their partner would be in the next week’s national tournament in Jackson, Tenn.
Lindsey Wilson faces Oklahoma Baptist University at 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 19, in the first round of the 32-team national tournament played at Oman Arena.
The Lady Bison enter the national tournament with a 29-4 record and a No. 2-seed in one quarter of the draw. The Blue Raiders (21-11) are the seventh seed in the quarter that also contains top-ranked Union (Tenn.) University who enters the tournament with a 32-0 record.
“At this stage of the season, there are no easy games,” Lindsey Wilson women’s basketball coach John B. Wethington said. “I know that Oklahoma Baptist is a very talented team and they’ve had a terrific season.”
The Lady Bison have winning streaks this season of five, eight and 15 games. They opened the season ranked No. 20 in the preseason coaches’ poll and quickly jumped to No. 6 in the first poll of the regular season.
OBU remained in the top-10 the remainder of the season reaching as high as fourth and finishing the season at No. 8.
The Lady Bison boast five players that average double figures led by sophomore guard Taujhnae Travis’ 18.6 points per game. Junior forward Heather Graham adds 12.6 per game and senior forward Betsy Simmons contributes 11.8.
“They will be a difficult team to defend,” Wethington said. “It’s obvious that you can’t focus your defensive effort on just one or two players. We’ll need a complete team effort on the defensive end if we’re going to be successful.”
Lindsey Wilson enters the tournament having lost two of its last three games. Both losses came to Mid-South Conference Tournament champion Georgetown (Ky.) College to end the regular season and in the tournament finals.
“Georgetown is a great team that just had our number this year,” Wethington said. “I know our ladies have confidence in their abilities and I really expect us to go down there and play well.”
Oklahoma Baptist enters the national tournament as one of the stingiest defensive teams in the NAIA.
The Lady Bison are eighth in scoring defense allowing just 57.1 points per game and No. 1 in field goal defense, limiting their opponents to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
Lindsey Wilson counters as the 10th best shooting team in the NAIA, making 45 percent of its shots on the season. The Blue Raiders also rank 21st in scoring offense at 74.7 points per game.
Both teams rank in the top 10 in rebounding, Lindsey Wilson is fourth at 44.2 rebounds per game and the Lady Bison are eighth averaging 42.7 rebounds per game.
“This time of the year, it’s all about match-ups,” Wethington said. “When the ball goes in the air, it’s my strength against yours; let’s see who wins.”
Lindsey Wilson’s strength this season begins inside with senior center Terran Duncan and freshman forward Viktoria Krell.
Duncan leads the team with 16.1 points per game. The Edmonton, Ky., native is coming off a career-high 33 points against Georgetown in the conference tournament finals.
Krell leads the team averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. She averages 11.5 points per game on the season.
“We start inside, but I’m confident in our entire team,” Wethington said. “I feel we are a balanced team much like Oklahoma Baptist and we can beat teams a variety of ways.”
The Blue Raiders will need that variety against one of the best teams in the NAIA.
“They are a terrific team that deserves all the accolades they’ve received this season,” Wethington said. “We deserve to be in the national tournament as well and we’re excited that we have an opportunity to play one of the best teams in the nation.”
