PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson women’s basketball team will try to make history here today at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center.
Never before has a Lindsey Wilson women’s basketball team cut the nets down at the Mid-South Conference Tournament. The Blue Raiders (21-10) came so close a year ago when Lindsey Wilson advanced to the finals only to fall in the final seconds to West Virginia Tech.
This season, a familiar tournament foe stands in Lindsey Wilson’s way.
No. 3-seed Georgetown (Ky.) College upset second-seeded University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Sunday to earn its fourth date with Lindsey Wilson in the MSC Tournament in as many years. Tip-off is set for 10 a.m. CT.
The Blue Raiders beat Georgetown 68-46 last season in Frankfort. The two prior years Georgetown ended Lindsey Wilson’s season in the MSC semifinals.
Lindsey Wilson coach John B. Wethington is well aware of the tradition of his team battling the Lady Tigers in the tournament.
“We’ve been anywhere from the top seed to the fifth seed and some how we always seem to meet Georgetown in this tournament,” Wethington said. “But this is the first time in the finals and we’re excited about the opportunity to play them for the title.”
Georgetown -- the only lower seed to win in either the men’s or women’s tournament -- will play for the third time today in three days. But Wethington doesn’t think fatigue will be a major factor.
“I sure playing three straight days will have some affect on them,” Wethington said. “But once they get into the flow and the adrenaline starts pumping, I don’t expect it will be an issue.
“I’m more concerned with how we come out of the locker room. Slow starts have really put us in a hole and we were not able to dig out against them (Georgetown) at home.”
The Lady Tigers (22-9) scored 12 of the first 16 points in Georgetown’s 89-77 win in Columbia on March 1. Georgetown -- the only team to beat Lindsey Wilson in the 2008 calendar year -- also beat the Blue Raiders (77-71) in Georgetown.
Is revenge on the mind of Wethington and his team?
“I think the ladies think about the fact that Georgetown has beaten us twice,” Wethington said. “It’s human nature to want to avenge those losses. We just have to concentrate on this game and leave those losses in the past.”
Both teams go into today’s game with the knowledge they have already clinched a berth into next week’s NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn.
Despite the berth, Wethington feels his team wants this championship.
“I know the ladies think about last season’s (tournament) loss a lot and about how much it hurt,” Wethington said. “They really want to win. It was one of our goals going into the season, to cut down those nets.”
