WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The No. 2-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team extended its winning streak to 20 on the season with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-14, 25-12) against Cumberlands (Ky.) Wednesday night.
The win marks the 19th time this season the Blue Raiders have won in straight sets and is the second sweep of Cumberlands this season.
In the match, Lindsey Wilson (20-0, 9-0 Mid-South Conference) hit .270 and recorded 47 kills. Grace Blomstedt and Paulina Sobolewska recorded 13 kills each to lead the team. Sobolewska's 13 kills marks the 13th time this season she has recorded double-digit kills. Makenzie Montano had 35 assists and nine digs as Caitlyn Tino recorded a team-high 18 digs in the match.
The Blue Raider defense held the Patriots to a .074 hitting percentage on the night.
In a tight first set, Lindsey Wilson and the Patriots were tied at 14 before the Blue Raiders won four-straight points to increase their lead to 18-14. The Patriots battled back to within one point in the set at 20-19, but LWC was able to outscore Cumberlands 5-1 to close the set and win 25-20. Blomstedt and Sobolewska led the offensive attack after recording five kills each. Lindsey Wilson hit .204 in the set and recorded 16 kills.
The Blue Raiders started the second set with a 12-2 run, including winning the first eight points. Lindsey Wilson went on to win the set 25-14. Blomstedt added five more kills in the set as LWC hit .184 and recorded 14 kills.
In the third set, the Blue Raiders never trailed and again started off strong by building a 10-2 lead. LWC then saw their lead shrink to 16-10, but were then able to win the final nine of 11 points to win the match, finishing the set with a .500 attacking percentage.
Earlier in the night, the junior varsity team won 2-0. The Blue Raiders won the first set 25-11 and then finished the match off in the second set winning 25-18.
Julia Ree Flanery and Courtney Evans each had a team-high six kills for Lindsey Wilson. Kate Staples and had a team-high 11 assists in the match and recorded six digs as Flanery and Mackenzie Paige McCollum had five digs. Evans also recorded three service aces in the match.
The varsity team is back in action on the road against Life (Ga.) on October 13 at Upper Gym in Marietta Georgia.
