COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team defeated Brescia (Ky.) 11-1 in seven innings on Wednesday at Egnew Park.
The Blue Raiders (26-20) out-hit the Bearcats (13-28) 14-2 in the run-rule victory. Lindsey Wilson stole five bases in the game. Steven Paredes led the way for Lindsey Wilson recording three hits and driving in two runs. Jayden Jackson, Ray Gonzalez and Ben Heideman also drove in two runs.
Jan Carlo Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning then advanced to second on a stolen base and reached third on a wild throw. Matt Mersinger brought in Ortiz to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Mauricio Guadarrama singled to begin the bottom of the fifth inning and reached second on a stolen base. Heideman drove in Guadarrama to increase the lead to 2-0, Heideman then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Jackson and Ortiz each drove in a run in the inning to increase the lead to 5-0.
Paredes hit an RBI double in the sixth inning to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead 6-0. Gonzalez and Jackson also added an RBI in the inning to give the Blue Raiders and 8-0 lead. Alex Flock got Brescia on the board in the seventh inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 8-1.
After Mersinger was hit by a pitch and Vincent Boils was walked, Heideman hit a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 9-1. Paredes then singled to make it 10-1 and Gonzalez doubled to give the Blue Raiders an 11-1 lead inducing the run-rule.
Riley Wentz (1-0) pitched a complete game seven innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out two. Wentz retired 10 consecutive batters from the fourth inning till the Flock home run in the seventh and faced one-over the minimum 22 batters.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Thursday for a three-game Mid-South Conference series against Pikeville at Egnew Park. Thursday is a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
