GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team lost 3-2 to Georgetown (Ky.) on Friday via a walk-off single by Rodnee Little.
Little came to the plate with runners on second and third in the bottom half of the ninth inning with the score tied 2-2. He singled home Taylor Morris to win the game for the Tigers (26-15, 9-7 Mid-South Conference).
The Blue Raiders (23-19, 8-5 MSC) tied the game in the previous inning when Ben Heideman, who was courtesy running for Jayden Jackson, scored from second base on Connor Anderson's one-out single. The eighth-inning scoring rally ended before Lindsey Wilson could take the lead as Jan Carlos Ortiz grounded into a double play to end the frame.
Lindsey Wilson jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning and was aided by a pair of passed balls. Ben Giland led off the inning with a single and later stole second base. With two outs in the inning and Matt Mersinger batting, Giland advanced to third on the first passed ball of the inning before coming home to score on another passed ball.
The second-inning run was the only one conceded by Georgetown starting pitcher Michael Conrad. The senior hurler worked seven innings while allowing the one unearned run on four hits. Conrad walked four batters and struck out five.
Conrad's counterpart – James Doubet – pitched eight-plus innings for the Blue Raiders and allowed three runs on nine hits and three walks.
Doubet pitched out of an early jam in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers put runners on first and second with no outs on an error and a walk, but Doubet induced a pop out before picking off Brandon Benson at first base. After walking the next batter, the senior pitcher escaped the inning with a fly out to center field.
Georgetown tied the game up with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second inning. Ryan Garner doubled with one out before advancing to third on a ground out. Like the prior half inning, Garner scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 1-1.
The Tigers struck again for a run in the bottom of the third. Benson led off the inning with a double then reached third base on a sacrifice bunt. Nick Giambalvo doubled to score Benson before Doubet retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Lindsey Wilson put two runners on in the top of the sixth inning but could not produce a run. With one out, Giland worked a walk then stole second base – his second swiped bag of the day. Ortiz also walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Mersinger then struck out to end the frame.
Georgetown out-hit Lindsey Wilson 9-6. Garner led all batters with three base hits and scored a run. Six Blue Raider hitters tallied one single apiece.
Breion Barron picked up the victory after pitching two innings of relief – allowing one run on two hits.
Doubet's record falls to 6-3 on the season.
The two teams contest the final two games of the series tomorrow. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. CT at Robert N. Wilson Field.
