NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team suffered an 8-6 setback at the hands of Indiana Southeast on Thursday afternoon at the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex.
No. 15-ranked Lindsey Wilson (13-11) battled back from behind early, but eventually fell to the Grenadiers (11-6) in a game where all 14 runs were scored in just three innings.
The Blue Raiders found themselves way behind after Indiana Southeast dropped a five spot in the bottom of the first, all five runs coming with two outs. After the bases were loaded, back-to-back singles scored a trio of runs before the Grenadiers' Tanner Leenknecht hit a two-run double to left field to make it a 5-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson cut into that lead in the top of the second with a pair of runs. A Jayden Jackson single combined with an error by the Grenadier leftfielder allowed Ben Giland, who reached on an error, to score the first run of the game for LWC. Jackson has now reached safely in all 20 games this season he has recorded an at-bat. Vincent Boils accounted for the other run after an RBI single scored Ray Gonzalez.
After three-straight innings without a run, another scoring flourish erupted in the sixth when the two teams combined for six runs.
Lindsey Wilson tied the game up in the top half of the inning after sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four times.
With runners on second and third and no outs, Connor Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the inning. Lindsey Wilson scored the next three runs all via RBI singles by Jackson, Steven Paredes and Vincent Boils, Paredes' and Boils' hits coming with two outs in the inning. The Blue Raiders had a chance to take the lead for the first time in the game after loading the bases following a Ben Heideman walk, but a fielder's choice ended the scoring chance.
Indiana Southeast took the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, scoring once after an error in the outfield allowed the lead runner to score and the final run on an RBI groundout.
Following a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh, the next nine Lindsey Wilson batters were retired in order to end the game as the Blue Raiders fell for the second time in as many days.
Larry Stewart (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound allowing one earned run on one hit in one inning of work.
Jackson went 3-for-4 at the plate while Boils went 2-for 4 with two RBIs for LWC.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday for a three-game series at Shawnee State (Ohio).
