COLUMBIA, Ky. – A Steven Paredes sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson baseball past Union (Ky.), 6-5, in the Blue Raiders' home opener.
The victory improved Lindsey Wilson's record to 3-7 while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-6.
Paredes stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and lifted a fly ball to deep center field. Ben Giland, who singled earlier in the frame, tagged up on the catch and scored the game-winning run – his third run of the game.
The run batted in was one of a game-high three for Paredes on the day.
Union scored a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to erase a 5-3 deficit.
J.C. Pena singled home Tyler Graham in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
Ronnie Healy led off the Union half of the eighth inning with a double and later scored on a double play to tie the game.
The Blue Raiders trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth but promptly hung three runs on the board.
Lindsey Wilson loaded the bases with none out in the fourth on the strength of consecutive singles by Connor Anderson and Giland. Jayden Jackson then reached first on an error after attempting a sacrifice bunt.
Ortiz followed Jackson with a sacrifice fly to score Anderson. Paredes then singled into left field to drive home Giland and Jackson.
Louis Corral started on the mound for Lindsey Wilson and worked five innings, allowing three unearned runs on two hits while striking out four.
Steve Colella pitched three innings of shutout ball to earn his second win of the season. In his last two relief outings, Colella has allowed a single run in seven innings of work.
The Blue Raiders out-hit the Bulldogs 13-11. Giland led all batters with three hits. Anderson, Ray Gonzalez, and Ortiz tallied two hits apiece.
Jackson hit his second home run of his career with a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Robbie DelaMontaigne drove in three runs for Union with a three-run homer in the fourth inning.
Lindsey Wilson continues its home stand with a two-game set against Spring Arbor (Mich.) on Friday. Game one is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT start time.
