LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson baseball scored three runs in the final two innings for a come-from-behind win in the series finale with fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett at Grizzly Baseball Complex.
With today's win, Lindsey Wilson coach Jonathan Burton picked up his 300th career win -- 201 wins as the Blue Raider skipper.
"Getting this 300th win today is so much more than about me, it's a testament of many great players that have bought into our system here at Lindsey Wilson and previously at Trevecca Nazarene," Burton said. "I am very grateful for everyone's hard work and commitment to both programs."
With Lindsey Wilson (2-7) trailing 5-3, Lawyer Braun opened the top of the eighth inning with a walk. Two batters later Conner Anderson doubled to deep left field to put Blue Raiders at second and third with just one out.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth.
Spencer Wise followed with another successful bunt -- this one, a sacrifice squeeze -- to plate Ortiz for the 6-5 lead.
The one-run lead was all Steve Colella would need to secure the win.
Colella entered the game in the sixth inning and surrendered just one run on four hits over his four innings en route to picking up the win. With the lead in hand, Colella retired the side in order in the ninth with a pair of strike outs and a pop out in foul territory up the first-base line.
"Our team needed this win today," Burton said. "We have the utmost respect for Georgia Gwinnett and knew the test we had before us this weekend. We have been challenged early (with our schedule), unlike any season before. This was a great team win today."
Georgia Gwinnett (9-4) scored in the first inning and two more in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Wise drove home the first Lindsey Wilson run in the top of the second, delivering a two-out single to score Ortiz -- who had tripled earlier in the inning.
Anderson cut the deficit to a single run in the top of the third with a RBI sacrifice fly plating Braun who opened the inning drawing a walk.
After the Grizzlies scored in the bottom of the fourth, the two teams exchanged runs in the seventh setting up the finish.
Ortiz and Gonzalez each finished with two hits while Wise provided a team-high two RBIs.
Trevor Bradley suffered the loss allowing three runs in 1-1/3 innings of relief.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Feb. 21, as the Blue Raiders host Union (Ky.) in their 2017 home opener at Egnew Park.
