KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson women's swim team sits in second place while the men's team is third following the opening day of competition at the Mid-South Conference Championships held at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.
The Blue Raider women accumulated 120 team points and trail only Cumberlands (Ky.) at 154 points, while the men racked up 107 points and trail Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) (142 points) and Cumberlands (159 points).
Lindsey Wilson's relay teams started off the meet strong by sweeping the 200-yard medley relay events. The women's team of Bailey Seitz, Ronni Borders, Jessica Macdonald and Ines Khiyara touched the wall in one minute and 49.09 seconds to claim the top spot and the First Team All-MSC honors that go with it. The quartet beat out the second-place time of 1:52.03 to earn 32 team points.
The men's squad of Clemens Paetzold, Jonas Mueller, Jose Prado de Lima and Iker Larzabal set a new meet record with their winning time of 1:34.68. They surpassed the previous record of 1:34.86 to earn First Team All-MSC honors and 32 team points.
Borders added an individual First Team all-conference honor after winning the 50-yard freestyle event with a new meet record time of 24.28 seconds. She edged out second place by .12 seconds.
Khiyara earned Second Team MSC honors after her runner-up finish in the 200-yard individual medley. She posted the fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries, but was unable to carry that momentum to the finals where her time of 2:11.96 fell short to Cumberlands' Christina Klouda at 2:08.20.
Paetzold picked up the lone individual all-conference honor for the men's side, doing so in the 200 IM with a second-place finish after touching the wall in 1:53.84 to pick up 13 team points.
Both 800-yard freestyle relay teams closed out the day strong with second-place finishes.
Caitlin Freeny, Emily Wood, Khiyara and Macdonald raced their way to an 8:00.03 to earn Second Team honors while the men's squad of Prado de Lima, Zachary Patzer, Paetzold and Larzabal earn Second Team all-conference honors with their runner-up time of 7:00.90.
Wood added 12 team points for the women's squad with a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle after touching the wall in 5:19.60.
In the men's 500 free, Prado de Lima took fourth with his time of 4:45.52, setting a new school record in the process by passing the previous time of 4:46.96 en route to 11 team points. Michael Peck took 11th in the event while Brennan Beckman placed 12th.
Mueller added a 10th-place finish in the 200 IM. Macdonald and Seitz both places in the top-10 in the 50 free, taking fourth and eighth place, respectively. Larzabal added a fifth-place finish in the 50 free to his day while Patzer placed sixth in the event.
The second day of action at the MSC Championships begins on Friday morning at 7:30 am CT.
