COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men’s basketball team scored 11 of the last 14 points to beat No. 11-ranked Pikeville (Ky.) College 65-57 on Thursday at Biggers Sports Center.
With the win, Lindsey Wilson (15-8 overall, 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference) jumps into second place in the MSC, one game behind No. 2-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) College. The Blue Raiders travel to Georgetown for a 3 p.m. CT tip-off on Saturday, February 9.
After Lindsey Wilson led by as many as 10 points in the first half, Pikeville surged back into the game and trailed just 33-31 at the break.
The Bears (18-4, 2-2) sprinted out of the locker room out-scoring the host Blue Raiders 10-2 to take a 41-35 lead. The six-point lead was the Bears largest of the game.
After exchanging baskets, Lindsey Wilson used a 16-6 run to take a 53-49 lead with 7:47 remaining.
Pikeville chipped away at the Lindsey Wilson lead over the next three minutes and eventually tying the game at 54-54 with 4:47 left. Freshman guard Justin Hicks’ three-pointer tied the game for the 12th and final time. The basket proved to be Pikeville’s final field goal of the game.
Lindsey Wilson used the final 4:47 of the game for its decisive run.
Junior guard George White opened the run with a three-pointer from the deep left corner to give the Blue Raiders a 57-54 lead. White finished with a game-high 23 points.
Pikeville senior forward Jeff Ferguson -- who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds -- made one of two free throws to cut the lead to two. Lindsey Wilson junior guard Quintez Thomas countered with a free throw to give the Blue Raiders a 58-55 lead with 1:23 left.
Following a Pikeville miss, LWC senior guard Donte’ Williams buried a three with 32.3 seconds left to push the Blue Raider lead to 61-55. Williams ended with 11 points.
Pikeville junior guard Xavier Yates’ two free throws cut the lead to 61-57, but that’s as close as the Bears would get.
Thomas knocked down two more freebies and White finished the game with a break-away lay-up for the 65-57 win.
The Blue Raiders were equally impressive on both ends of the court.
Lindsey Wilson shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field while limiting Pikeville -- who entered the game second in the NAIA in field goal percentage at 53.9 percent -- to just 38.2 percent (21-of-55).
“We played so well on the defensive end and outside of a few possessions in the second half really executed offensively,” Lindsey Wilson men’s basketball coach Paul Peck said. “No one could have predicted this team would be 3-1 (in the MSC) at this point.
“I’m very proud of the kids, but we understand there is a long way to go to achieve our goals.”
Lindsey Wilson junior forward Sam Walton added 12 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks in the win.
Pikeville junior forward William Harris chipped in 11 points and Yates added 10.
