BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson Volleyball battled back all day en route to capturing the Mid-South Conference Tournament title in five sets over Georgetown (Ky.) today at South Warren High School.
Despite struggling at times -- thanks to the grittiness of the Tigers -- Lindsey Wilson emerged with the five-set win to bring home its second straight tournament title and fourth in the last six seasons.
The Blue Raiders earn the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 19, at various sites across the NAIA. Lindsey Wilson -- based on its national ranking -- will earn an automatic bid to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa. That tournament begins on Nov. 29 and runs though Dec. 3.
Lindsey Wilson trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in sets before emerging with a 16-14 fifth-set win to claim the title. The fourth-ranked Blue Raiders improve to 31-1 with the 22-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-11, 16-14 win.
To continue the day's theme of getting off the canvas, Lindsey Wilson battled back from deficits of 4-0, 8-6 and 11-9 in the fifth set en route to the win. The Blue Raiders seized their first lead of the decisive set at 13-12 -- part of a 5-1 run.
Lindsey Wilson served for the match at 14-12 and again at 14-13 only to have the Tigers (29-7) win back-to-back points to knot the set at 14-14.
A Georgetown service error gave the Blue Raiders their third match point and Makenzie Montano -- the MSC Player of the Year -- provided a dump kill at the net to give Lindsey Wilson the program's fourth conference tournament title.
Three Blue Raiders recorded double-digit kills, led by Eileen Acuna's 15. Lauren Streets added 13 kills while Grace Blomstedt chipped in 12. Montano provided a double-double with 51 assists and 12 digs. She added six kills in the match.
Lindsey Wilson closed the match out-hitting Georgetown .245 to .156 and out-blocked the Tigers 15-8. Blomstedt provided 10 block assists to aid in the Blue Raider block advantage.
Georgetown's Jenny Howell ended the match with 18 kills while Caroline Ricks contributed 13. Sarah Bell matched Montano's effort with 51 assists and 10 digs.
Lindsey Wilson dropped the opening set 25-22 despite out-hitting the Tigers .265 to .205.
The Blue Raiders trailed much of the first set only to pull even with the Tigers at 19-19. But Georgetown scored six of the set's final nine points to claim the opening set.
Lindsey Wilson responded in the second set with a modest three-point run midway through the set to provide separation from the Tigers. The Blue Raiders extended the lead to as many as seven points en route to the 25-19 win.
The see-saw battle continued in the third set as the Tigers built an early lead and hung on for the 25-20 set win. The Blue Raiders hit just .135 as a team in the set, including making five attacking errors.
Lindsey Wilson dominated the fourth set, sprinting out to a 9-2 lead and never looking back. The Blue Raiders blocked four Georgetown attacks in the set -- part of eight attacking errors from the Tigers, who hit -.057. Lindsey Wilson extended its lead to as many as 14 points on its way to the 25-11 win, setting up the dramatic fifth set.
The national tournament field is scheduled to be announced on Monday, Nov. 13.
