BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Aaron Ashton and Austin Atwell hit back-to-back home runs, Aaron Doughty pitched a complete game, and Lindsey Wilson baseball defeated St. Catharine (Ky.) 12-3 in a Mid-South Conference Tournament elimination game at Bowling Green Ballpark on Saturday night.
With the win, Lindsey Wilson advances to the championship game against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Sunday. The Blue Raiders must defeat the Tigers twice on Sunday to lift the trophy.
The Blue Raiders (37-21) scored in 5-of-8 innings against the Patriots (35-22). Lindsey Wilson scored two in the first, four in the second, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
With the Blue Raiders leading 6-0, Ashton came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth with Caleb Ratzman, who had walked, on first. On a full count offering, Ashton hit his seventh home run of the season over the right field fence scoring Ratzman. Atwell came to bat next and hit his sixth home run of the season over the left-center field fence. Victor Nazario drove in the final run of the inning with a single to put the Blue Raiders up 10-0.
The offensive output was more than enough for Doughty (7-5), who picked up his first nine-inning complete game victory of the season. He held the Patriots to three runs -- two earned -- on nine hits, while striking out seven and walking four.
Ashton went 2-of-4 with a walk, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Atwell tallied three hits in four at-bats with a walk, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Edgar Lebron garnered three hits in five at-bats, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Nazario went 2-of-5 with an RBI, Brandon Munoz collected two hits in five at-bats, and Ryan Harper recorded two hits in three at-bats with a walk and two RBIs.
Marvin Galarza (7-3) started for St. Catharine and picked up the loss. He surrendered six runs -- all earned -- on five hits and two walks in 1-1/3 innings pitched.
The Blue Raiders face Campbellsville for the second time an as many days at Bowling Green Ballpark on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT, with an if-necessary game to follow.
