Ukpong goal not enough as Blue Raiders fall 2-1 in overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson men's soccer fell 2-1 in overtime to No. 11-seed Auburn (Ala.) University Montgomery in tonight's 2013 NAIA National Championship Semifinal game at Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.

Lindsey Wilson (17-4-2, 8-0-1 MSC) had a 1-0 lead heading into the 90th minute before AUM was given a free-kick with two seconds left on the clock. Sebastian Wladyko crossed the ball over the 18-yard box to Mathis Kroeger who slipped open on the far side of the net and put the ball past Yuta Nomura to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, a defensive miscue led to the game-winning goal by AUM. Elvar Sigurdsson would hit the post after Nomura came up high in the box to attack the ball. The ball squeaked through him and the Blue Raider defenders and Sigurdsson would find his rebound for an easy goal to give the Warhawks a win and a trip to the 2013 National Championship Finals.

Lindsey Wilson had it chances to take control of the game with AUM playing most of the second half and overtime a man down. Christian Holthaus received a red card in the 56th minute as he pulled Billal Qysier down by the jersey just outside the 18-yard box.

Lindsey Wilson started to push the ball after the red card, making crisp passes and moving the ball freely around the pitch.

The Blue Raiders would test freshman goalkeeper Phillip Hitpass five minutes after gaining the man-advantage. Renan Serafim was left wide-open in front of the goal and Yusuf Ackers fed him a great ball. Serafim volleyed it to himself and blasted a point-blank shot into Hitpass' chest and it went over the net to keep the game scoreless.

Elijah Ukpong would not miss his chance in the 62nd minute, heading an Aleksi Pahkasalo corner off the post and into the net to make it 1-0.

The Warhawks would look to strike right back as Allan Harwell got by the Blue Raiders defender and Nomura made a diving save to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Bastien Montagnon was close to making it 2-0 when Lwandiso Gonya served him a header that went off the crossbar. That was the best chance the Blue Raiders had to gain a two goal advantage in the final 20 minutes.

The Blue Raiders would finish the game with only two shots on goal while AUM recorded five. Lindsey Wilson would out shoot the Warhawks 15-9.
