Blue Raiders doubles team of Bogajo and Charters capture doubles title
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Lindsey Wilson's Fernando Bogajo beat University of the Cumberlands' (Ky.) Ariez Hershaam in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional championship match over the weekend at the Lackey Tennis Center.
With the 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win, Bogajo advances to the ITA National Championship at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Meyers, Fla., Oct. 11-13.
Bogajo -- the tournament's top-seed -- had to battle back after dropping the opening set to the fourth-seeded Hershaam. After losing the first set 6-4, Bogajo cruised in the final two sets 6-0 and 6-2 to win his third straight ITA regional title.
In addition to his singles win, Bogajo teamed with Francisco Charters to capture the regional doubles title. Bogajo and Charters defeated Fabricio Morales and Edberg Espinoza 8-6 in an all Lindsey Wilson final.
The Blue Raiders had six players in the singles field of 64 with three of them reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament. Fifth-seed Fabricio Morales and ninth-seeded Edberg Espinoza joined Bogajo in the quarterfinals.
Bogajo got through the opening rounds beating Zach Baulch (6-0; 6-1), Andres Burgos (6-2; 6-1), and Diogo Soavez (6-1; 6-2) before meeting teammate Espinoza in the quarters.
Espinoza won the first set 6-4 over Bogajo, but an injury in the second set forced him to retire tied at 4-4. Espinoza defeated Andre Jacomini (6-0; 6-1), Jacob Loveland (6-1; 6-0) and eight-seeded Sebastian Marot 6-3, 6-3 to get to the quarterfinal matchup with Bogajo.
In the semifinals, Bogajo met Bethel's (Tenn.) Peter Baca -- the No. 3-seed in the tournament -- after Morales retired due to injury in their quarterfinal match. Bogajo defeated Baca 6-4, 6-0 to reach the finals.
