Blue Raiders remain unbeaten in conference play
LEBANON, Tenn. -- In an epic battle that lasted more than eight hours, No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis outlasted No. 9-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) to win 5-4.
Lindsey Wilson's Gilles Cornelis fought off multiple match points in the decisive match and eventually won his match and team match in a tiebreak.
Cornelis defeated Jeremy Fleming in the sixth-seeded singles match 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (4) to help the Blue Raiders improve to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-South Conference.
The match was one of five singles matches to reach three sets during the marathon team match.
Lindsey Wilson claimed an early 2-1 lead following doubles play.
The Blue Raider duos of Cornelis and Pablo Vilches and Fernando Bogajo and Francisco Charters each won doubles points.
Cornelis and Vilches defeated Fleming and Pablo Borrero 8-4 in the third-seeded match. Bogajo and Charters also claimed an 8-4 win in the top doubles match over Manuel Marcelo and Pedro Rodrigues.
The Bulldogs (12-3, 4-1 in the MSC) captured their only doubles point as Andres Burgos and Sebastian Nava beat Fabrico Morales and Sam Rogersen 8-6.
Charters would win the only singles match of the day to end in two sets. He beat Burgos 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Cumberland would take the top two singles matches as Marcelo defeated Bogajo 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Rodrigues beat Morales 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Marlon Dal Pont dominated the third set to beat Borrero 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to win a vital singles point at the third-seeded singles.
Nava also pitched a shutout in the final set in a win over Vilches in the fifth-seeded match. Nava won the match 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-0 to set up the finale with Cornelis and Fleming.
The win helps the Blue Raiders remain unbeaten in conference play this season.
