Play continues on Friday at the USTA/ITA National Championships
MOBILE, Ala. -- Lindsey Wilson College's Fernando Bogajo won his opening round match on Thursday at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championship at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
Bogajo -- seeded third in the eight-man event -- defeated Julian Kurz 6-1, 6-4 to advance to Friday's semifinals. Bogajo faces Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University's Patrick Besch -- who beat Concordia-Irvine's (Calif.) Bruno Kliskinic 6-7 (8), 6-1, 7-5 on Thursday -- at 10:30 a.m. CT on Friday.
Bogajo and the rest of the field advanced to the national championships after winning their respective regional qualifiers.
The championship match is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 13.
While Bogajo was battling in the singles tournament, Gilles Cornelis and Fabricio Morales split a pair of matches in the doubles championships.
The fourth-seeded Blue Raiders dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University's Diego Gonsalvez and Julian Kurz in the opener. Cornelis and Morales bounced back with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Graceland (Iowa) University's Juan Jose Mateus and Raul Mendez in the consolation bracket.
Cornelis and Morales face Spring Arbor (Mich.) University's Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mayes in the fifth-place match on Friday. First serve is set for 4 p.m. CT.
