CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Four Lindsey Wilson College errors proved too much to overcome for the top-seeded Blue Raiders in a 6-4 loss to Shawnee State University in the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament at Tiger Field on Campbellsville University's campus.
The loss ends the Blue Raiders (41-14) tournament run and now Lindsey Wilson must await an at-large bid into the NAIA National Tournament, which begins May 11 at sites across the nation.
Fifth-seeded Shawnee State moves into the MSC Tournament finals tonight against Georgetown College at Tiger Field.
The Lindsey Wilson offense struggled today to find an answer for Shawnee State University starting pitcher Austin Dunfee.
Dunfee limited the Blue Raiders to five hits while allowing four unearned runs -- all in an error-filled fourth inning. In addition to the win, Dunfee (11-5) set a single-season strikeout total for the Bears (34-24) today by striking out seven Blue Raiders.
The Bears scored three times in the first two innings off three Lindsey Wilson errors to take a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders briefly grabbed a 4-3 lead with their four runs in the fourth.
Adam Peacock led off the inning with a double and later scored on Shawnee State's first error in the inning. Manuel Alonso and Drew Barrett -- who each reached base thanks to errors -- scored on a Manuel Ozoria double and a sacrifice fly from Jeff Kerian to tie the game at 3-3.
Ozoria scored on Tyler Bernard's single up the middle for the 4-3 lead.
The Bernard hit was the last for the Blue Raiders as Dunfee allowed just two base runners -- a hit batter and a walk -- the remainder of the game. He retired 16 of the last 18 batters to close the game.
Shawnee State answered the Lindsey Wilson rally with a three-run fifth inning.
A walk and another error started the Bear game-winning inning and chased Lindsey Wilson starter Rob Kurtz (4-2) from the game. Kurtz allowed six runs -- two earned -- and four hits while issuing four free passes.
Lindsey Wilson's Aaron Mayfield finished the fifth and Daniel Pulliam added four scoreless innings to keep the Bears within reach.
However, Dunfee was too much en route to the 6-4 loss.
Peacock finished as the lone Blue Raider with two hits while Shawnee State's Cody Morrison and Matt Jones added two hits each for the Bears. One of Morrison's two hits was a solo home run in the first inning.
With its regular season title and its national ranking, Lindsey Wilson has all but assured itself of an at-large bid. The 46-team field will be announced by the NAIA on May 6.
