Brian Suerdick delivers one-out walk-off home run to help RedStorm beat the Blue Raiders
COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Brian Suerdick broke up a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning with a three-run game-winning home run off the left-field fence to help No. 8-seed Rio Grande (Ohio) upset top-seeded Lindsey Wilson 6-3 on Thursday in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament at Egnew Park.
Suerdick's walk-off hit was his only of the game as it helped starter Ryan Robertson pick up the complete-game win on the mound.
Robertson (4-7) scattered eight hits and allowed three runs with nine strikeouts through nine innings. Blue Raider reliever Daniel Pulliam (7-3) took the loss after entering a tie game in the eighth inning with no outs.
Pulliam allowed three runs on two hits with the three runs coming across the plate on the out-out homer.
Matt Addis started the game for Lindsey Wilson and lasted seven innings, allowing three runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
Shortstop Leandro Perez, left fielder Adam Peacock and catcher Lance Harrington all tallied two hits for the Blue Raiders with first baseman Manuel Ozoria delivering a pair of RBIs on one hit.
Rio Grande finished with just four hits on the day, as shortstop Kyle Perez, right fielder Shane Spies and first baseman Kyle Findley joined Suerdick with hits.
Runs were spread out to start the game as the RedStorm added a run in the first inning and Lindsey Wilson didn't tie the score until the fourth when Peacock scored on a single by Kerian.
Lindsey Wilson gave itself a 3-1 cushion in the sixth as Perez and Peacock both scored on a long single by Ozoria.
The 3-1 lead held up until the seventh inning when Rio Grande scored one run in both the seventh and eighth innings before the decisive ninth-inning homer.
The Blue Raiders resume play in the double-elimination tournament at 4 p.m. CT against the loser of No. 4 St. Catharine (Ky.) and No. 5 Shawnee State (Ohio) at Egnew Park. Rio Grande advances to the 7 p.m. game against the winner between the Patriots and Bears.
