Blue Raiders score 34 points in throwing events to finish third among combined NCAA and NAIA field

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Erico Smith was the fastest runner on the track in the 200-meter dash and Takudzwa Mhlanga scored in three events to help the Lindsey Wilson College men's track & field team finish third on Friday night in the Eastern Kentucky University Open at Tom Samuels Track.

Teams earned points for top-eight individual finishes and the Blue Raiders finished with 95.5 points to take their place among the top three.

The host Colonels won the open with 140 points, while Bellarmine (Ky.) took second with 99.

Smith posted the lone win of the night in the 200 meters, crossing the finish in 22.29 seconds for 10 points.

Kameron Spivey backed him up in the 400-meter dash with a second-place finish in 49.99 seconds for eight points.

Mhlanga scored team points in the 110-meter hurdles, the high jump and the javelin throw. He finished second in the hurdles with a time of 15.44 seconds for six points, second in the high jump with a leap of 1.95m/6-4.77 for eight points and fifth in javelin with a throw of 46.16m/151-5.32 for four points.

Spivey added to his day with a pair of jumps, placing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.19m/20-3.70 for four points and sixth in the triple jump (11.83m/38-9.74) for three points.

The Blue Raiders racked up 34 of their team points in throwing events, led by Joshua Kles and Charlie Mullennex.

Kles was second in the discus throw with a heave of 43.69m/143-4.07 for eight points and fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.93m/137-6.78 for five points. The sophomore added a fifth-place showing in the shot put (13.48m/44-2.70) for four team points.

Mullennex was third in the shot put with a throw of 13.71m/44-11.76 and seventh in the discus after a toss of 36.98m/121-0.36 for eight total points.

Daniel Farris scored on two throws as well, finishing fifth in both the discus (38m/124-8.06) and hammer throw (39.63m/130-0.23) for a combined eight points.

John Updike was the final scorer, adding a point on an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw (37.52m/123-1.16).

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on April 27-28 in the Mid-South Conference Championships in Rome, Ga.
