Blue Raiders lead the MSC heading into regular season's final week

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team did it again.

The Blue Raiders overcame a 19-point second half deficit to upset host Georgetown College 71-69 today at Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium. Lindsey Wilson overcame a 19-point second half deficit on Jan. 14 to beat the Tigers 79-78 in the first meeting this season.

The win gives the Blue Raiders their first-ever sweep of the Tigers and moves Lindsey Wilson into first place in the Mid-South Conference standings with a week to play in the regular season.

Down 41-22 in the opening moments of the second half, the Blue Raiders began their comeback scoring 13 of the next 17 points to climb within 45-35 with 16:18 left in the game.

No. 10-ranked Georgetown (20-7, 10-5 in the MSC) regained the momentum and led 60-49 with 8:37 left.

But Lindsey Wilson sophomore Chase Cox scored on three straight Blue Raider possessions to cut the lead to inside single digits with seven minutes left in the game. Cox finished 16 points.

The No. 16-ranked Blue Raiders (18-8, 10-4) continued their methodical climb back into the game and a 3-pointer from the right corner by senior Chase Spreen tied the game at 62-62 with 3:16 remaining. Spreen led the Blue Raiders with a game-high 20 points -- 17 in the second half.

Tied at 67-67, Georgetown's Maurice Pearson hit one of two free throws to give the Tigers a 68-67 lead with 55 seconds left in regulation.

Spreen -- who hit an 80-footer in January's game for the win -- did it again as he put the Blue Raiders ahead for good with 38 seconds left. This time, Spreen attacked the baseline and curled into the lane for a teardrop from five feet out for the 69-68 lead.

Following a Georgetown turnover -- one of its 18 for the game -- and a foul, senior Justin Archie calmly buried two free throws to give Lindsey Wilson a 71-68 lead with 5.5 seconds left.

The Blue Raiders -- who wins for the third straight time over Georgetown for the first time in the series history -- fouled Aaron Morris with 1.2 seconds left in the game to prevent the Tigers from a game-tying 3-point attempt.

After missing the first free throw, Morris -- who appeared to be trying to miss -- made the second throw to cut the lead to 71-69.

Archie heaved the ball into Lindsey Wilson's half of the court in an effort to end the game, but Pearson picked the pass off near the half court stripe. His attempt at the buzzer sailed well-right of the target giving the Blue Raiders the two-point win.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field, but 65.4 percent (17-of-26) in the second half. After scoring just 22 points in the first 20 minutes, the Blue Raiders scored 49 in the second half.

In the first half, the Blue Raiders struggled offensively making just eight of 26 shots while committing 12 turnovers. The Tigers -- who had won 43 straight home conference games -- led by as many as 20 points (39-19) in the half.

Lindsey Wilson senior Charles Baker score 10 points to join Spreen and Cox in double figures. Georgetown's Allan Thomas led the Tigers with 18 points.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 23 as Lindsey Wilson hosts Campbellsville University at Biggers Sports Center.
