Blue Raiders host NCAA DI Western Kentucky on Saturday
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's team lost its first match of the season on Wednesday 5-1 to NCAA Division I Morehead State University.
The No. 14-ranked Blue Raiders' lone point came from their top doubles team of Trina Slapeka and Slavica Milanovic. The Lindsey Wilson duo beat Morehead State's Brooke Helms and Victoria Cran 8-5.
Morehead State (3-4) grabbed an early 1-0 lead after winning at No. 2 doubles. The Morehead State pair of Alix Young and Alexis Garrett dispersed LWC's Diana Gerlakh and Laura Vergara 8-1 to take the lead.
Slapeka and Milanovic evened the match at 1-1 just before Morehead State would take the lead for good with a win at No. 3 doubles. Morehead State's Jessica Montemayor and Shilpa Naruka defeated Anna Gaprindashvili and Rocio Cardo 9-7 in a hard-fought match to gain the advantage.
It was all Morehead State in singles play.
Cran helped the Eagles extend their lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Milanovic in the third-seeded singles. Garrett followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Gerlakh in No. 2 singles.
Montemayor finished off the Blue Raiders (1-1) with a 6-0, 6-2 win over def. Gaprindashvili in No. 5 singles to secure the 5-1 win.
A pair of matches was halted -- due to Morehead State having the necessary points for the win -- and one singles match did not start.
"We had our chances early to make this a match, but couldn't capitalize," Lindsey Wilson tennis coach Daniel Finn said. "Morehead State is always a tough place to play and Coach Fulton's team was definitely ready for us. We will take a lot from this and be ready on Saturday."
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at Noon CT on Saturday, Feb. 18 as the Blue Raiders host Western Kentucky University at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
