COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College couldn't get off a good shot at the end and West Virginia Tech shot 52.2 percent from the field as the visiting Golden Bears hung on for a 96-93 win in overtime on Thursday at Biggers Sports Center.
The Golden Bears led by 11 points with seven minutes to play in regulation, but a 14-3 run by the 12th ranked Blue Raiders over the next four minutes tied the game for the 14th time and set up a nail-biting finish.
Overtime was forced when down by three, West Virginia Tech's David Rawlinson completed a layup on a foul and knocked down the free throw with less than 10 seconds to play.
Coming out of a timeout, Lindsey Wilson (15-8) looked for Chase Spreen on a deep 3-pointer that missed badly and took the teams to overtime tied at 84-84.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a three-point lead early in the extra frame on a shot by Wesley Hanspard in the paint. Coming to the rescue again, Rawlinson buried a tying 3-pointer on the next possession, followed by a layup from Donald Robinson off a turnover and the Blue Raiders never regained the lead.
Down the stretch both Kalen Kimberland and Charles Baker hit just one of two free throws. In the game's final play, down by three, Lindsey Wilson found no open shooters as Spreen missed a shot inside the 3-point line at the buzzer.
Hanspard led all scorers with 28 points and seven rebounds, Spreen added 19 points and made three 3-pointers, while Kimberland went 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and finished with 15 points. Justin Archie and Baker joined them in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
For the Golden Bears it was Rawlinson leading the way with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds. Robinson backed him up with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Josh Proctor (13), Eddie Hayden (12) and Rahshon Tabb (11) all reached double figures scoring.
Baker tallied a game-high 10 rebounds to post the only double-double of the game for the Blue Raiders as West Virginia Tech ultimately won the rebound battle 38-35.
Both teams took care of the basketball as Lindsey Wilson dished out 19 assists with just 16 turnovers, led by Archie's eight assists and Spreen's seven. The Golden Bears turned in an even 18 assists and 18 turnovers.
With West Virginia Tech (17-7) lighting up the nets for 52.2 percent shooting from the field, Lindsey Wilson wasn't far off with a 47.8 percent mark. The Golden Bears did hit 6-of-15 3-point attempts for 40.0 percent, while Lindsey Wilson hit 5-of-24 for 20.8 percent.
The game was tight throughout, the score at halftime was in favor of the Golden Bears 42-37 and by game's end there had been 17 ties. Lindsey Wilson's largest lead was five points with 8:19 to play in the first half, while West Virginia Tech's was the 11-point lead late in the second half.
West Virginia Tech got a big lift from its bench, outscoring the Blue Raiders 34-9, while Lindsey Wilson got help on the offensive glass for a 23-16 second-chance points advantage.
Neither team led by more than three points through the first eight minutes of the game until the Golden Bears took off on an 8-1 run over a four-minute span in the first half to gain early momentum that helped push them to the win.
With the loss, the Blue Raiders have now dropped four straight games, with three being decided by three points or less.
The top of the Mid-South Conference standings are a crowded place as four teams are less than three games out of first place.
Heading into Saturday afternoon's tilt with Rio Grande (Ohio) at 4 p.m. CT in Biggers Sports Center, the Blue Raiders are still in control of second place in the conference standings.
