Sophomore Freddy Luciani advanced to the singles semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Four Lindsey Wilson College tennis student-athletes competed over the weekend in the Montgomery Country Club Collegiate Invitational Championships hosted by Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.).

The top two men and women from selected programs of NCAA and NAIA were invited to the MCC for a single elimination tournament sanctioned by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Lindsey Wilson senior Candela Castanon and sophomore Jessica Weyreuter represented the women’s program and junior Eduard Khan and sophomore Freddy Luciani represented the men’s program.

In the men’s singles tournament, Luciani advanced to the semifinals with wins over AUM’s Fransisco Redondo 6-0, 6-1 and Winthrop University’s Vinicius Bortolatto 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4).

Luciani’s tournament ended in the semifinals with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 loss to University of Idaho’s Andrey Potapkin.

Khan, in the bottom half of the draw, fell in the opening round to Wichita State University’s Thiago Dos Santos 6-3, 6-0.

In the men’s doubles, the Blue Raider tandem advanced to the tournament’s finals before falling to the Wichita State duo of Dos Santos and Albert Ballesta 8-6.

Along the way to the finals, Luciani and Khan defeated the doubles pair from Clemson and Idaho.

In the women’s singles, Castanon and Weyreuter each advanced to the quarterfinals before falling.

Castanon defeated West Florida University’s Paola Arevalo 6-2, 6-1, before falling to Clayton State University’s Anna Redecsi 6-2, 6-2.

Weyreuter defeated Southeast Missouri University’s Bryce Kristal 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (4), before falling to Clemson’s Estefanie Balda 6-0, 6-0.

In the women’s doubles, Castanon and Weyreuter defeated Southeast Missouri’s Kristal and Drew Kristal 8-4 to advance to the semifinals. The Lindsey Wilson duo dropped their next match to Clemson’s Balda and Laurianne Henry 8-3.
