Spreen scores a team-high 20 points, Kimberland adds 17

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College's 79-72 win against the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Thursday at Biggers Sports Center was literally a slam dunk, as Charles Baker put the game away with an emphatic slam off a lob from Justin Archie as the clock winded down to zero.

The win evens the Blue Raiders' conference record at 1-1, while they are 6-3 overall. UVa.-Wise drops to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Senior Chase Spreen led Lindsey Wilson with 20 points on three 3-pointers and a 9-for-10 performance from the free-throw line. Junior Kalen Kimberland added 17 points, knocking down 8-of-12 shots from the field.

The Cavaliers were led by Josh Jordan with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Travis Berry added 15, Norris Gaskins 13 and Jermaine Wright 10.

It took 10 minutes for Lindsey Wilson to earn its first lead (17-16) in the game on a layup by senior Justin Archie, and it never lost it the rest of the way.

UVa.-Wise clawed within two points late in the second half at 61-60 on a Jordan free throw with five minutes to play but Lindsey Wilson responded with a 7-0 run started off a Spreen 3-pointer.

Showling resilience, the Cavaliers once again cut the deficit to two with 30 seconds to play and just like the prior instance it was the Blue Raiders with the most gas left in the tank as Spreen made 5-of-6 free throws and Baker threw down his slam to put the game away.

The Blue Raiders shot 55.6 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from behind the arc to help offset being outrebounded 28-27.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday against the top-ranked University of Pikeville (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center.
