Blue Raiders are in Geneva, Ohio for championships
GENEVA, Ohio -- Six Lindsey Wilson College student-athletes have qualified for the 2011 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships set to take place on March 3-5 at the GaREAT Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio.
Five of the Blue Raiders' six entries are competing in the 3,000-meter race walk with sophomore's Ricardo and Roberto Vergara competing in the men's rave and seniors Megan Furnish and Chelsea Conway and freshman Reini Brickson competing in the women's race.
Ricardo Vergara enters the championships with the highest national seed as his top time of 13 minutes and 14.81 seconds this season in the third best time in the field. Roberto is the fifth seed with a time of 13:47.03. Both walkers are competing in their second indoor national championship.
Cornerstone (Mich.) University's Kris Shear is the favorite in the men's race walk after qualifying with a time of 12:30.28.
Furnish leads the Lindsey Wilson trio in the women's race with a nationally fourth best qualifying time of 15:07.41. The Blue Raiders are represented in three straight seeds as Conway is fifth with a time of 15:34.07 and Brickson is sixth after posting a time of 16:22.38.
Cornerstone also has the favorite in the women's race walk in Janelle Brown who qualified as the first seed with a time of 14:28.75. Furnish was the top Blue Raider finisher last season, taking fifth place in 14:44.13.
Apart from the two groups of race walkers, sophomore Sharon Ronoh
qualified for nationals in the women's 5,000-meter run. Ronoh is the 23rd seed entered after posting a time of 18:19.07 this season.
