RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A goal by freshman midfielder Julia Persson in the game's final minutes wasn't enough to overcome California Baptist University's two first-half scores as Lindsey Wilson College dropped a 3-1 decision to the Lancers on Thursday.
Third ranked Lindsey Wilson (1-1-0) fell behind early when California Baptist (2-0-0) sophomore midfielder Kylee Nicassio scored the first of her two goals in the ninth minute.
The eighth ranked Lancers took three more shots before a header in the 25th minute by Nicassio put them ahead 2-0. The Blue Raiders first shot attempt didn't come until the game's 32nd minute.
California Baptist was quick to score again out of the halftime break. Sophomore midfielder Fabiola da Silva was able to tap in a rebound off a shot by freshman midfielder Eva Solis in the third minute of the half.
The Lancers held their 3-0 lead for the next 39 minutes until Persson gave Lindsey Wilson its late goal.
With just over two minutes left in the game, LWC senior defender Yolanda Hamilton sent a cross to Persson that she was able to tap in for the score.
California Baptist attacked the Blue Raider goal with a flurry of shots, taking 18 attempts to Lindsey Wilson's five. Ten of the Lancer's shots were on goal. Blue Raider senior goalkeeper Carrie Revlett finished the game with seven saves, while California Baptist senior keeper Emily Evanson collected only one.
Lindsey Wilson stays in California through Saturday to face Azusa Pacific University at 5 p.m. CT. The game is part of the Cougar Classic, hosted by Azusa Pacific. LWC's next home contest starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3 against Indiana Wesleyan University at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
