COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Mid-South Conference preseason coaches' poll has been released for the upcoming 2009 softball season.
Lindsey Wilson College is predicted to finish fourth and received 23 points from the coaches.
Georgetown (Ky.) College is picked as the pre-season favorite collecting 35 points including five first place votes. Campbellsville (Ky.) University received 31 points for the second spot and the University of the Cumberlands rounded out the top three with 24 points.
Last season, Lindsey Wilson went 32-18 and finished 11-9 in the Mid-South Conference during coach Tom Opdenbrouw's last season. Lindsey Wilson has hired Victoria Masters to replace Opdenbrouw for the 2009 season.
Masters was an assistant at Chadron State (Neb.) College the previous two years and was an integral part of the process to create the program from scratch at Chadron State, assisting in all the day-to-day activities of the program.
The Blue Raiders will return two integral parts from last year's squad. Senior Leigh Ann Moore was the ace of the Lindsey Wilson staff last year. Moore compiled a 15-6 record and a 1.83 earned run average. She also threw a team-high 137 innings and completed 13 games.
Senior Whitney Mink was one of only two Blue Raiders to bat over .400 last season. Mink hit .403 and had a team-high 38 runs batted in. She also led the team with hits (54) and runs scored (40).
Following Lindsey Wilson in the polls were Pikeville (Ky.) College (17 points), St. Catharine (Ky.) College (10) and West Virginia University Institute of Technology (7).
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
Lindsey Wilson is scheduled to open the season at Noon C.T. on Feb. 21 as the Blue Raiders travel to Warner (Fla.) Southern College.
